The Irishman has endured a difficult spell since joining the Tigers
Championship club Hull City will make a decision on the future of defender James Furlong in the next few weeks, ahead of the upcoming January transfer window.
Furlong has gone through a difficult year so far, but is regaining fitness after two injuries and is continuing to work with Sergej Jakirovic’s first team squad.
The left-back, who joined City from Brighton and Hove Albion in the summer of 2023, has never played a Championship game for the Tigers, with his solitary competitive outing coming in an FA Cup replay at Birmingham City under Liam Rosenior in January 2024.
A loan spell at AFC Wimbledon in the second half of last season was cruelly ended prematurely by injury, which meant he missed out on the Wombles’ play-off final win at Wembley in May, before returning to the MKM Stadium.
Boss Jakirovic says the 23-year-old Dubliner will continue to work with the first team squad and play for Conor Sellars’ Under-21s to build up his fitness before a decision is made on him, with his contract set to expire next summer, though the club do have a 12-month option.
“He has trained with us,” Jakirovic said. “In a short period, he’s had two big injuries to his quad. “He’s now with us, he has trained with us, and we have put him in the Under-21s to help him get his rhythm.
“We will see in January, maybe, whether or not he can go out on loan again to find his rhythm, or if not, he will be with us and then play for the Under 21s, but we will see what happens over the next few weeks.”
