BAE Systems is on the hunt for new apprentices, undergraduates and graduates
Defence giant BAE Systems is creating almost 90 new jobs at its Humber region operations as part of a huge drive to root out the next generation of workers. BAE Systems has announces that applications for its 2026 apprenticeship intake are open, with bosses hunting for newcomers who will take up roles at its bases in all corner of the UK, including its air division in Brough.
The company is looking to fill 53 apprenticeships, 10 undergraduate jobs and 26 graduate roles at the Brough base for next year’s intake. The roles are among 1,100 apprenticeships and a total of 2,227 jobs up for grabs in the UK at its facilities in Scotland, North West, North East, Yorkshire and Humber, the South and South East, across its air, land, weapon systems, digital intelligence, electronic systems, maritime services, naval ships and submarines businesses.
The announcement comes as the company announces a record achievement with more than 6,800 young people in training across its UK operations. The company said the figure, which includes around 5,100 apprentices and 1,700 graduates, underlines its commitment to developing the next generation of talent.
Since 2020, the BAE Systems has recruited more than 10,000 apprentices and graduates and invested over £1bn in education and skills, strengthening the nation’s industrial skills base while contributing to local and national economic development. It said the 2026 newcomers will get the chance to work on some of the world’s most advanced defence and security programmes in highly-skilled roles.
Bosses said they will contribute to projects of significant international importance, including the Global Combat Air Programme, the UK’s next-generation submarines and Type-26 frigates, alongside technologies such as cyber, space and drone capabilities.
Charles Woodburn, chief executive, BAE Systems, said: “The record number of apprentices and graduates in our business working on some of the world’s most important defence programmes highlights the exceptional talent of young people in this country and our commitment to developing the skills vital for our nation’s future security. With more than 60 programmes across the UK, we’re proud to offer opportunities for meaningful and rewarding careers, helping to protect those who protect us.”
Luke Pollard MP, Minister for Defence Readiness and Industry, said: “Defence is leading the way as an engine for growth creating good jobs across the UK. These record-breaking figures from BAE Systems show the next generation of 5,100 apprentices and 1,700 graduates will be at the forefront of building the warships, fighter jets and munitions to help our Armed Forces keep Britain secure at home and strong abroad.
“Building on our Strategic Defence Review the government is committed to the largest sustained increase in defence spending since the end of the Cold War, driving defence as an engine for growth by supporting businesses big and small and creating opportunities for young people across the UK.”
Lache, a 20-year-old apprentice at Brough, said she has significantly developed a wide range of skills since joining, and highly recommends the scheme.
She said: “I was also able to work with industry professionals, who offered valuable guidance and advice into my daily work. Additionally, I was also able to work on the aircraft themselves, such as Tornado and Hawk. I was involved in fitting and replacing aircraft components, interpreting design drawings and signing off maintenance paperwork.
“The culture at BAE Systems is very inclusive, innovative and bold, which is embedded in the way our teams work and collaborate. The culture pushes employees to become their best self by offering multiple opportunities and experiences to achieve success. I am a STEM ambassador, where I actively participate in events held to inspire a younger generation of students to engage with STEM and apprenticeships.
“I believe this scheme will offer you a unique hybrid combination of hands-on industry experience, an academic degree, personal development and a competitive salary. A BAE Systems apprenticeship will challenge you to come out of your comfort zone to grow both professionally and personally.
“From working with a range of people from all ages and backgrounds to participating in extra-curriculars with other early careers, you are able to seek a fruitful number of opportunities aligned to your goals.”
