A charity set up in memory of Hull dad Scott Akester has taken another step on its road to raising awareness around one-punch attacks and the devastation they can cause.

Scott, 31, lost his life to a one punch in November 2022, leaving behind his broken-hearted parents, partner, and young daughter. Since August 2023, the family has been running One Punch Hull & East Yorkshire, to raise awareness around the risks of one-punch attacks and the effects on families and friends from such a crime.

Scott’s mum and dad, Debbie and Steve, with family members and trustees of the charity, have spread the “Stop, Think and Walk Away” message to hundreds of thousands of people by taking educational talks into schools and colleges. The workshops help young people realise the risks of violence, and that just one punch can ruin the lives of both victim and perpetrator.

They also help young people understand the importance of managing their anger and being aware of their circumstances, to avoid putting themselves in harm’s way. Now, One Punch Hull & East Yorkshire has launched a hub in Princes Quay Shopping Centre.

The official opening of the venue will not be until Saturday, January 10, at noon. However the hub is open in the lead-up to Christmas. Debbie said: “With the run-up to Christmas it is important that everyone spending time with family and friends at parties, and at pubs, ensure they keep themselves safe as well as those around them.

“Our motto – Stop, Think and Walk Away – will help keep themselves safe. Please share the link to our video with your family and friends, your sons and daughters.

“Be aware of your surroundings. If you find yourself in a situation where you feel intimidated, get yourself out of there and keep yourself safe.”

The hub will have people on hand to support families affected by a one-punch attack or other violent crimes, and for those struggling to manage their emotions. The hub is on the upper floor of Princes Quay, opposite Next Outlet, where you can find out more about the charity’s work and check out what is available by way of help.

Debbie said: “One Punch Hull & East Yorkshire can also offer one-to-one sessions with young people and their parents. Our lived experience is helping change behaviours and supporting families.

“We have delivered Scott’s Story to over 11,000 young people this year, delivering over 100 sessions in our schools, colleges and training centres during 2025, with excellent feedback wherever we go. As part of the workshops we share the One Punch Ruins Lives video, created with the support of Humberside Police.”
