Charity’s latest move in raising awareness around the devastation one-punch attacks can cause

Everything you need to know about One Punch Hull & East Yorkshire

  • Hull man Scott Akester, 31, was killed with a single punch to the face. It followed a drunken disagreement with his friend outside a Hull pub on Saturday, November 19, 2022.
  • Michael Pearson was sentenced in June 2023 to seven-and-a-half years in jail for the manslaughter of Scott. He had denied the offence but was convicted by a jury after a three-week trial.
  • Scott left behind his parents, Debbie and Steve, his partner, Naomi, and young daughter, Ella. In the wake of his death, his family and friends launched the charity One Punch Hull & East Yorkshire, to raise awareness of the risks of one-punch attacks and the devastating impacts of a split-second decision, on victim and perpetrator.
  • The over-riding message is from One Punch Hull & East Yorkshire is to stop, think and walk away from an argument or a fight. The charity has been spreading awareness to hundreds of thousands of young people, through talks in local schools, colleges, training centres and businesses; attending community events and launching a play, ‘One Punch’, written by The Godber Foundation.
  • One Punch Hull & East Yorkshire has now launched a support hub, in Hull’s Princes Quay Shopping Centre. The hub will have people on hand to help families affected by a one-punch attack or other violent crimes, and for those struggling to manage their emotions.
