Everything you need to know about major plans for Hull’s former Debenhams – Hull Live

Councillors are set to decide on the future of the massive site that has been empty since 2021

Key facts ahead of decision on Debenhams conversion

  • This week, Hull City Council‘s planning committee is set to decide on plans to bring the former Debenhams building in Hull city centre back to life. Plans would see the huge Prospect Street site being converted into 178 apartments with retail units on the ground floor.
  • The 180,000 sq ft site shut its doors 2021 when Debenhams closed its remaining high street stores across the country. The much-loved brand was bought out by Boohoo and became an online-only retailer. Despite the site having been vacant for close to half a decade, the Debenhams signage still on display.
  • In April, property developer DBG Group announced they had “ambitious plans” for the Prospect Street site. The developer, who are also behind the refurbishment of City Point, formerly Shirethorn House, said they were “excited to bring” the Debenhams site “back to life.”
  • A planning application was later submitted to Hull City Council which, if approved, would see the vacant site being turned into 175 one-bedroom, and 3 two-bedroom apartments. Plans explain the apartments would be spread across all of the building’s five storeys. Retail units on ground floor street fronts along Ferensway and Brock Street are also included in the plans.
  • The council’s planning committee are set to make a decision on the development at a meeting on Wednesday, December 3. At the meeting, councillors will also make a decision on plans for a 109-bed HMO in the former Portland Hotel on Paragon Street.
