The Met Office says there is a ‘clear signal for strong winds and periods of heavy rain’ this weekend which ‘may cause disruption’
An 18-hour weather warning has been issued for this weekend with heavy rain that “may cause travel disruption and flooding”. The Met Office has issued the yellow-level alert across much of England and Wales, including all of Hull and East Yorkshire.
The forecaster says 20-30mm of rain could fall “fairly widely” with more than double that in some areas. Strong winds may also have an impact in the area. The weather warning will come into effect at 6am on Saturday and continue until midnight.
A band of rain is expected to arrive our region from the early hours and move over throughout the morning. Further spells are possible later on in the day. Sunday is forecast to be a drier day but feeling even colder.
Met Office chief meteorologist Jason Kelly said: “While the exact track of the low remains uncertain at this time, there is a clear signal for strong winds and periods of heavy rain, which could lead to surface water flooding and delays to road and rail travel. Rain will also push into northeast England during Saturday, some of which could fall as snow over higher ground when the system meets colder air coming down from the north.
“Sunday will be drier and brighter, albeit colder, for many areas with blustery winds lingering near some North Sea coasts. Expect widespread frost overnight into Monday before the next weather system approaches.”
The Met Office says the wet and windy weather is being driven by a strong jet stream from the Atlantic. This is steering a series of low-pressure systems across the UK.
In its warning, the forecaster says: “Rain, heavy at times, is expected to develop across southwest England on Friday night and spread northeastward during Saturday before clearing into the North Sea on Saturday night. There is uncertainty in the corridor of heaviest rainfall across England and Wales, but there is potential for 20-30 mm to fall fairly widely with 50 mm possible in places.
“Over high ground, there is a low chance of 60-80 mm falling. Strong winds may accompany this heavy rain, particularly across eastern parts of England on Saturday night.”
The wet weather is expected to result in spray and flooding and some roads while bus and train services could be affected.
Temperatures on Saturday are forecast to peak at around 10C but it will feel much cooler in the brisk winds. The gusts are set to ease overnight into Sunday before picking up again heading into Monday.
