Plans for site also include a restaurant on the first-floor

The former Bob Carver’s fish and chip shop in Hull’s Old Town is set to be turned into a new eatery. Hull City Council has agreed a long-term lease with Maytree Catering for the site on Trinity House Lane.

Maytree Catering has proposed a £150,000 refurbishment of the site which has been unoccupied since May 2021 when the fish and chip shop closed. The new ground-floor eatery will be incorporated into the Trinity Market.

The firm was selected after the property was put on the open market for refurbishment and interested parties were assessed in consultation with the council. In addition to a ground-floor eatery, plans also include a first-floor restaurant and office space on the second and third floors.

In total, Maytree Catering’s plans would see over 450sqm of unused commercial space in the city centre being brought back to life. The council will continue to work with Maytree Catering to ensure all designs for the project preserve the architectural integrity of the listed building, as well as longer-term development.

The council have added that the development will help support the Old Town’s independent hospitality economy. It is also expected to create up to 15 new jobs, as well as apprenticeships.

After being redeveloped in 2017, Trinity Market has become home to countless independent businesses serving food from across the world. The market, located next to Hull Minster also hosts events such as live music performances.

Cllr Jackie Dad, deputy leader of the council has welcomed the news. She has said: “This new establishment will complement the existing food and beverage operators in the area around Trinity Market and provide a welcome boost to the hospitality sector operating across the Old Town.

“There was considerable interest in the unit, but the council is pleased to have agreed a long-term lease with the right partner whilst also helping to create new city centre jobs. Trinity Market and the surrounding area is already a place residents and visitors enjoy spending time and socialising and I have no doubt that Maytree Catering’s offering will only improve that.”
