You may not realise that you could be increasing your energy costs and raising the risk of mould in your home with this practice
A heating specialist has cautioned Brits against a widespread radiator “mistake”. This habit could be adding an extra £55 to your annual heating costs.
Gordon Wallis, from heating oil supplier Your NRG, has urged people to stop draping wet laundry on their radiators. Whilst it may seem “convenient”, the practice could be significantly reducing their efficiency.
Gordon said: “Drying clothes on radiators might feel like a convenient solution, but it can actually cost you more in the long run. Did you know this common mistake could increase your energy bills by up to £55 a year?”.
“When radiators are blocked by damp clothes, they can’t heat the room effectively, leading to wasted energy and higher costs.”
He also cautioned that the habit could heighten the risk of mould developing in properties. “Excess condensation from this method can promote mould growth, potentially causing damage to paintwork and triggering allergens,” he said.
How to dry clothes indoors
As an alternative, he recommended making use of coat hangers and natural sunlight wherever feasible. Gordon said: “There are several effective alternatives to drying clothes on radiators that can help maintain a comfortable and healthy indoor environment.
“Utilising natural light by placing clothes near windows, periodically turning clothes over for even drying, and using hangers to reduce creases are all practical strategies. Adding lavender oil to fabric conditioner can also help combat unwanted smells, ensuring your clothes stay fresh without the need for additional drying time.”
Laundry tips
Reducing the amount of clothing you wash at once can also speed up drying times. “It’s important to consider the impact of overcrowded airers and washing machines on drying efficiency. Washing fewer clothes per load allows for better airflow and quicker drying times, reducing the risk of damp and musty smells,” he advised.
“By adopting these simple yet effective tips, homeowners can optimise their indoor drying process while minimising energy consumption and maintaining a comfortable living space.”
Radiator upkeep
Gordon further stated: “Keeping your radiators in top condition is key to keeping your energy bills under control. Simple tasks like bleeding radiators to release trapped air and ensuring they’re not blocked by furniture can make a significant difference.”
