The bridge has been shut since September
Work on Drypool Bridge is continuing as the end of the bridge’s scheduled ten-week full closure edges closer. The city centre crossing, which connects east and west Hull, has been shut since September 15 for repairs.
Hull City Council has shared a video, credited to contractor Esh Construction, providing an update on the work that has already been undertaken on the bridge. It features the council’s portfolio holder for transport and infrastructure, Cllr Mark Ieronimo, and Esh’s senior project manager, Paul Allen.
In the clip, Cllr Ieronimo emphasised it is “really important” that the bridge is fixed “as quickly as possible.” He added: “What we don’t want to see is this bridge closed again for some time.
“We need to make sure that as we’re going from one project to another, we’re doing this as well as we can. This will mean fewer disruptions in the future.”
Mr Allen explained that a number the project’s aspects have already been carried out including the removal of the surfacing on the bridge deck. He added: “The steel nosing has been removed and replaced with a new stainless one.”
The full closure is still anticipated to be lifted in “late November”. The council has not yet provided a specific date but this is expected in “due course”. However, additional limited closures are expected next year, with the full programme of works scheduled for completion in summer 2026.
As well as the Drypool Bridge itself, Alfred Gelder Street has also been shut between the bridge and the junction with Lowgate. This closure is also linked to work on the Hull District Heat Network, a £125m project, work for which includes laying pipes below a number of street in the city, including Alfred Gelder Street.
This closure has led to concerns for businesses on the street, who say footfall has been hindered. Both Food for Cowboys and The White Hart pub have raised concerns in recent weeks.
