The summer signing has not yet found his way in the Tigers starting XI
Hull City head coach Sergej Jakirovoc says Brandon Williams will be given the time to get himself back up to speed as he looks to make his mark at the MKM Stadium.
Williams, who joined City on a free transfer during the summer, has played just five minutes of football this season with that coming off the bench in the 3-0 home loss to Blackburn Rovers back in August.
Since then, the 25-year-old missed games with Swansea City and Southampton with a concussion he picked up in training, but was back on the bench at Watford, before being left out of squads for the Tigers’ last two home games.
In a bid to build up his fitness and confidence, the defender played 90 minutes on Tuesday as City’s Under-21s roared back from 2-0 down to win 3-2 with ten men at Coventry City.
The former Manchester United academy graduate has endured some well-publicised struggles in the past couple of years, and his last meaningful contribution in the Championship came almost two years ago, so Jakirovic says it’s important the Tigers are patient with the defender and don’t rush him unnecessarily, hoping the valuable minutes gained at the CBS Arena will help him.
“This is my decision right now,” the City boss said when asked why he wasn’t in the squads for MKM Stadium meetings with Preston North End and Sheffield United. “He is not on the level like other players still, but he is trying. He’s hard working, so you see, it’s two years without football, but we will try to help him.
“It’s not easy for sure (for Williams). I know that, but he needs to work very hard because it’s not so easy to return on the pitch, especially now that some other players have an advantage.”
