A coin expert has revealed that a 50p piece from 2009 could be worth around £300 – but you need to make sure you have the right design
Brits have been urged to check in their wallets for a rare coin that could be worth hundreds of pounds. A special edition 50p from 2009 could fetch around £300 when sold, an expert said. Recently, a rare 50p coin from the Kew Gardens collection made £122 on eBay after a bidding war.
Speaking on social media platform TikTok, coin expert Coin Collector UK, revealed that a specific design made to celebrate the 2012 London Olympics is highly sought after by collectors.
However, you have to make sure you get the 2009 one and not the 2011, as the latter is only worth around £2. “This Olympic 50p coin can be worth £300,” he told his followers.
“There are two different versions of this coin and one is worth much more than the other. If you find one with the date 2009 on the back of the coin, then this is the expensive version worth around £300 pounds.”
This coin features an image of a high jump athlete and was created by eight-year-old Florence Jackson from Bristol as part of a Blue Peter competition.
The Coin Collector continued: “Less than 20,000 of these were made as part of a Blue Peter competition and they were put into special cards like this.
“Although it was not minted for circulation there is a very small chance you may find one in your change if someone has broken it out of the pack and spent it.
“The regular 2011 one that’s in this video, unfortunately doesn’t go for this large sum with over two million of these made – it is still worth keeping and worth about two pounds.”

He added: “But remember, it’s the year 2009 that you want to be checking for, which is worth the big money. Always keep any Olympics if you find them.”
