St Helens were given a police escort as they left Hull KR’s Craven Park after a ‘terrorist threat’ was issued on the club’s social media account

St Helens left Hull KR’s Craven Park stadium under police protection following what the club described as a “terrorist threat” made to their social media account.

The end of the play-off semi-final between Hull KR and St Helens was met with jubilation from the home supporters, but anxiety amongst some in the Saints camp as head coach Paul Wellens was spotted talking to officers as he departed for the dressing room after the game.

When questioned regarding the police incident, a club spokesman confirmed it concerned a threat which had been made on the club’s Instagram page.

“We had a terrorist threat to the Saints Instagram account. We reported it to our ground safety officer. Our ground safety officer then spoke to the GSO here.

“They are taking it with the upmost seriousness.”, reports All Out Rugby League.

Both Hull KR and St Helens are not expected to comment further at this stage and for obvious reasons the specifics of the threat have not been revealed either at this time.

All parties are understood to have treated the threat with utmost gravity.

The revelation emerged after Saints witnessed their campaign conclude in Hull at the hands of the Challenge Cup champions. For the second consecutive week, Saints demonstrated true grit to battle their way back into the match.

However, unlike the previous week at Headingley, there was no late drama at Craven Park as the Cup winners and League Leaders’ Shield victors maintained their composure and extended their lead each time Saints looked to close the gap.

This signifies the conclusion of a somewhat tumultuous season for Wellens’ team, who bounced back from early season difficulties to confidently secure a top six position and subsequently reach the semi-finals.
