Experts have shared a simple trick to deter spiders from your home, and it only costs 30p.
Brits have been advised to attempt a straightforward 30p method to ward off uninvited guests. According to specialists, utilising the rind of a particular fruit could help repel spiders.
As temperatures drop and rainfall increases, it becomes typical to spot more of these eight-legged creatures inside your property than normal. This occurs because spiders enter buildings seeking dry, warm environments.
September also marks spider breeding season, with male spiders venturing into houses searching for females. With this in consideration, it’s worthwhile implementing measures to spider-proof your property if you’re not keen on them.
Fortunately, this can be straightforward and needn’t be expensive. Specialists have revealed that spiders dislike potent aromas.
This includes the scent of citrus fruits. Therefore, you might attempt an effortless 30p solution – utilising the remaining rind of a lemon, or other citrus fruits available at home.
House Beautiful says: “Spiders dislike citrus fruits, including lemons, oranges and grapefruits. If you want to keep them out of your home, mix your leftover lemon, lime or orange peel with water to create a paste.
“Rub over your windowsill and say goodbye to the creepy crawlies for good.” Currently, you can purchase a lemon for approximately 30p each.
Speaking to the publication, Mike Norton – trade and projects director at Magnet Trade – commented: “This is one of the easiest and most effective tricks, costing around 14p compared to a £10 ready-made spider repellent. Rub lemon peels all over the windowsills or anywhere spiders tend to perch, such as on skirting boards and bookshelves.

“The strong citrus scent will repel them away and give your home a lovely fresh scent.” Additional potent aromas are believed to ward off spiders as well.
The following plants might assist in keeping them away for this very reason:
- Basil
- Rosemary
- Lavender
- Mint
- Chrysanthemums
Further suggestions for discouraging spiders include clearing away any possible hiding spots, frequent hoovering, shutting all windows and doors during evening hours, and switching off lighting.
