The facility could be built on the site of a former bakery

Hull and East Yorkshire Mind has submitted an application to Hull City Council detailing plans to expand behind their current site on Beverley Road. The mental health charity is hoping to build a number of new facilities on an unoccupied section of land off Providence Row.

The submitted application proposes building a new two-storey administrative building and four supported living apartments. Three of the apartments would be in the form of a terrace row whilst the fourth is proposed to be in a separate building.

The site would be constructed on a piece of land between Somerscales Street and Providence Row to the rear of Mind’s current Wellington House building. The site in question remains vacant after having once been home to a bakery that was built in the 1920s, plans explain.

Submitted planning documents state the site would be aimed at “adults living with disabilities such as mental health, learning disabilities and autism.” It is also said: “The accommodation will provide a sheltered and safe environment while the residents build up their confidence, regain their daily living skills and continue the process of recovery.”

Plans also explain other benefits the proposals could provide. It is stated the facility would:

  • Promote rehabilitation and community integration
  • Be empowering and provide access to a central shared area
  • Given the site location, provide ease of access to local shops, bus routes, and employment opportunities, etc
  • Provide employment for 30 staff full time equivalent

The car parking facilities at the site would be extended to accommodate the new buildings. Whilst the current parking area at the front of Wellington House will not change, an additional ten spaces will be provided on Somerscales Street and Providence Row.
