Here we take a trip back in time just west of Hull to the Anlaby area as it was in decades gone by. The East Riding village has, of course, been around for hundreds of years but having expanded enormously in the past century, along with development on Anlaby Common, it is now something of an urban sprawl running continuously into Hull itself.

However, despite the huge spread of housing, along with retail development – once mostly industrial – along Springfield Way, the centre has still retained a village feel to this day that is distinct from the hustle and bustle of the nearby city. Meanwhile, the expanse of Anlaby Common itself with the Humber Bridge looming in the distance is not only roamed by some equine friends but is a notable habitat and breeding ground for frogs.

The gallery below features some of the most recognisable features in the Anlaby area, including its shops, along with some of the area’s people. Though many of the names above the doors have changed over the years with the likes of John Turnbull and McLeish’s bakery no longer around, there are still many other stores, restaurants and takeaways in the area showing, though things have changed, the Anlaby area is still thriving.
