The ex-Sheffield United ace has bagged four goals in seven league and cup appearances

Oli McBurnie has joked that he’s going to help Hull City teammate Ryan Giles get an England call-up if the pair continue to enjoy a fruitful relationship in front of goal.

For the second game in a row and third time this season, Giles provided the assist for McBurnie to score as the Tigers convincingly swept aside Southampton 3-1 at the MKM Stadium on Saturday.

At Swansea, Giles angled in a cross to get City level, and against the Saints, his pinpoint free-kick was planted straight on the head of the Scotland international to ruthlessly head into the net to make it 3-0.

That goal came after McBurnie had nodded into the path of John Lundstram to make it 2-0 from Lewie Coyle’s cross and hammer home the advantage Kyle Joseph’s first-half goal gave the Tigers.

“I told Gilo I’m gonna get him an England call-up if he carries on,” the City striker told Hull Live. “I’ve played against Gilo many times, and I know how good his quality is on the ball.

“I’ve said to him, just keep crossing the ball. Don’t think about it, take your touch, I’m gonna be there, and I might miss one, I might miss two, but if you keep crossing the ball, I’m gonna get a goal, and he has been doing it.

“I think he’s got three assists for me this season so far, and then you’ve got the quality on the other side with the skipper (Lewie Coyle) as well, so for me it’s a dream to have players who just want to cross the ball.

“I know Ryan Fraser from playing with him at Scotland, and at the end, he said he could do with someone in his team who just wants to cross the ball to and score goals. For me, having players like that around me is music to my ears.”

When asked about Giles’ response to the potential England call-up reference, McBurnie’s response was typically comical, indicative of the spirit in the dressing room.

“He doesn’t really have many responses,” McBurnie joked. “He just laughs. I don’t think he understands what half of the time I’m speaking about. He’s not the brightest tool in the box, but he can cross a ball, so he’ll do for me,” the frontman said with a firm smile etched across his face.
