The Met Office is warning of a band of “slow-moving” heavy rain that “may cause some disruption” this weekend. A 21-hour yellow-level warning has been issued covering many parts of East Yorkshire to the north and west of Hull, including Beverley, Hornsea, Driffield, Goole and Bridlington.

The forecast says “20-30mm of rain is likely to fall quite widely and there is a chance 60-80mm of rain could fall in places” with the warning in place between 9am on Saturday and 6am on Sunday. The downpours are expected to arrive later on Saturday morning and continue through the day and overnight into the early hours of Sunday.

Meanwhile, temperatures are set to fall, particularly later on in the weekend and beyond with highs of around 14 or 15C on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday – “below normal” for the time of year. It will also be chillier than of late overnight too with lows of 7-8C around our region.

Met Office deputy chief meteorologist Tom Crabtree added: “From mid-Saturday onwards, increasingly strong gusty winds and perhaps some thunder will also accompany the rainfall, further increasing the risk of disruption.”

In its warning, the Met Office says: “A band of rain, heavy at times, across Wales, northern England and southern Scotland is expected to remain slow-moving during Saturday morning before making erratic eastward progress, eventually clearing early on Sunday.

“Whilst there is still some uncertainty in the focus for the heaviest rainfall, 20-30 mm of rain is likely to fall quite widely and there is a chance that 60-80 mm of rain could fall in places. These higher accumulations may not be confined to high ground only. Due to this uncertainty, further changes to the warning area are possible.

“As the area of rain clears east, a spell of strong northwesterly winds may develop later Saturday and Sunday morning, most likely towards North Sea coasts.”
