Plans to convert a former bingo hall in Hull city centre into a church have been approved by Hull City Council. The plans relate to the former Mecca Bingo Hull Cecil which closed down in February 2023.

An application for a new warehouse near the River Hull has also been approved by the council. The warehouse is for a Hull based firm that is seeking to move to a larger site.

Former Mecca Bingo

The plans for the former bingo hall were first submitted to the council in May. The application has come from the Calvary International Christian Centre who currently hold services at the Reel Cinema in St. Stephen’s shopping centre.

The bingo hall, which is located on the corner of Ferensway and Anlaby road, was originally the Cecil Cinema. Given its location at the heart of the city centre, the site should be a piece of prime real estate, however it has remained empty since the bingo hall’s closure over 2 years ago.

Little detail was included in the application regarding how the church will look either internally or externally, however the limited plans that have been submitted to the council show how the church would have a main auditorium on the ground floor.

The Calvary International Christian Centre has operations in various cities across the world including Manchester, Johannesburg, and Leeds. On its website the organisation describes itself as one that is “committed to proclaiming; salvation, hope and the goodness of Jesus Christ which changes lives, in every nation, city, town, and village we find ourselves.” Its website also claims that 2025 is “our year of stretching faith.”

The impressive looking property is now seemingly a 12-bed house share according to a listing online. A comment provided by Hull City Council’s Conservation Officer, Stephen Walker states: “The works will preserve the principle facade of the local listed building. A majority of the solar panels will be located within an inward facing roof scape which would not impact upon the architectural interest of the building.”
