The Tigers remain hopeful of a positive outcome following their lengthy hearing this week
Hull City expect to find out the outcome of their appeal against a three-window fee restriction next week after their hearing was heard on Wednesday.
Initially, the EFL indicated that City would be told the result of their appeal within 48 hours, and the club hoped they would have clarity before the season opener at Coventry City on Saturday lunchtime.
That now appears unlikely with the club preparing to have their fate revealed at some point next week amid what is a busy start to the new campaign, with City facing Wrexham in North Wales on Tuesday in the first round of the Carabao Cup, before hosting Oxford United next Sunday in their first MKM Stadium outing.
Wednesday’s hearing, which was conducted virtually, began in the morning and ran into the afternoon. It lasted for four hours, with City’s lawyer presenting their case to a panel of three independent judges, while the EFL’s case was put forward by their own legal counsel.
Sources have told Hull Live that City’s team came away from the hearing feeling positive about the potential outcome and remain bullish in their belief that the club have a strong case to have their punishment reduced at the very least but, as yet, they do not know how it will go.
The EFL slapped the Tigers with a three-window transfer fee restriction in early July for clocking up more than 30 days of late transfer fee payments in the past year, meaning the club cannot buy players or pay loan fees until January 2027.
There’s an acceptance that the punishment is strong, and there’s a belief that the three-window ban will be reduced at the very least, and from the club’s point of view, lifted entirely.
How that could look remains uncertain. The panel could still uphold the EFL’s initial ban or it could be lifted altogether. There is also precedent for it to be reduced and then suspended for a period of time, similar to what happened with Oxford United last year.
Despite the strong punishment from the EFL, City have enjoyed a fine transfer window so far. The club have been able to bring in experienced Championship campaigners Semi Ajayi, Akin Famewo and John Lundstram, along with top target Oliver McBurnie.
They’ve also signed talented young Manchester City winger Joel Ndala and are on the cusp of bringing back striker Joe Gelhardt from Leeds United on loan for the season.
