Hull City are interested in signing former Liverpool and Newcastle United midfielder Jonjo Shelvey. That is according to Sun journalist Alan Nixon, who claims the Tigers have held talks with the 33-year-old over a potential move to the MKM Stadium this summer.
Shelvey is a free agent following his departure from Burnley. He joined the Clarets on a short-term deal in the January transfer window but only made four appearances for Scott Parker’s side as they finished second in the Championship.
Shelvey returned to England in the New Year following spells in Turkey with Çaykur Rizespor and Eyüpspor. The ball-playing midfielder, who has been capped six times by England, boasts a wealth of experience, having played in the Premier League with Liverpool, Newcastle and Nottingham Forest. He made over 200 appearances for the Magpies and was an influential figure in their Championship title success in 2017. His previous clubs also include Charlton Athletic, Blackpool (loan) and Swansea City.
Central midfield is an area the Tigers are keen to strengthen before the 2025/26 Championship season. Hull Live understands talks are ongoing with Nottingham Forest to sign Lewis O’Brien but the financial package required to get the deal done remains a stumbling block. O’Brien played alongside Shelvey at the City Ground.
City have been active in the summer transfer window as they look to build a team capable of challenging in the upper reaches of the division. Red Laalaoui, Dillon Phillips and Semi Ajayi have come through the door and Gustavo Puerta’s loan was turned into a permanent transfer.
