Five East Riding beaches have been honoured with prestigious Blue Flags or Seaside Awards for 2025. Hornsea and Withernsea have both been awarded Blue Flag status by environmental organisation Keep Britain Tidy, in the internationally recognised scheme.

Meanwhile, Seaside Awards have been presented to three other beaches – Bridlington North, South Landing and Wilsthorpe – in the annual programme recognising the UK’s best beaches.

Hornsea has now achieved a Blue Flag for five years running, while Withernsea has earned one for three years in a row.

As part of the awards, Hornsea, Withernsea and Wilsthorpe all recorded ‘excellent’ water quality results, with Bridlington North and South Landing recording ‘good’ results.

Councillor Barbara Jefferson, East Riding of Yorkshire Council ’s cabinet member for heritage and coastal, said: “I’m extremely proud that Hornsea and Withernsea will be flying Blue Flags once again and that Bridlington North, South Landing and Wilsthorpe have achieved Seaside Awards.

“These are fantastic achievements and prove that our beaches are among the best in the country. We are blessed with marvellous beaches in the East Riding, from Flamborough and Bridlington down to Hornsea and Withernsea.

“They are always popular with residents and visitors, and no doubt will be again this summer.”

The council’s coastal services team, which manages the area’s beaches, achieved all five awards it applied for.

Now in their 38th year, Keep Britain Tidy’s annual awards honour the UK beaches which meet high standards in quality, cleanliness, safety, and the range of facilities they have for the public.

The Blue Flag and Seaside Awards are aimed at improving the quality of England’s coastline and promoting the country’s best beaches.

Blue Flag, the world’s most recognised award for beaches and marinas, is an environmental education programme managed by Keep Britain Tidy on behalf of the Foundation for Environmental Education.

It is only presented to beaches with water which has achieved the highest classification as set by the EU Bathing Water Directive and has an environmental education programme, and, to qualify, each applicant must meet and maintain a series of stringent environmental, educational, safety and accessibility criteria.

Seaside Awards are presented to the best beaches in England and celebrate the quality and diversity of our coastline.

Among the criteria beaches are assessed against are:

Safety and services, such as first aid, lifeguards where necessary

Environmental information including displaying details about local eco systems

Environmental management, including litter and waste

Water quality – Blue Flag beaches must meet the ‘excellent’ water quality standard as set out in the EU bathing water directive and Seaside Award winners must meet the ‘sufficient’ standard

Keep Britain Tidy’s chief executive, Allison Ogden-Newton OBE, added: “In England we are lucky enough to have some of the best beaches in the world. It’s wonderful to see the flags flying proudly over these East Riding beaches, demonstrating their quality to residents and visitors alike.

“The awards are a credit to the collective efforts of beach and site managers, volunteers, residents and businesses who should take pride today in their tireless efforts to maintain, protect and improve some of our best-loved and most popular blue spaces.

“Visitors to a beach flying a Blue Flag can be assured the beach will be clean, safe and meet the highest environmental standards.”

There’s nothing quite like a delicious curry to get the weekend off to a good start.

I wanted to try something a bit special and heard many good things about Maharajah Restaurant through the grapevine. I finally visited this Holderness Road restaurant for a sit-down meal on a Friday night.

When I walked in, I was immediately impressed by the ambience. The decor was tasteful with an overall colour theme of relaxing purple and off-white.

I sat in a little booth with a pretty glass divider—it felt very cosy. The music was decent and unobtrusive enough for conversation.

Service was very efficient and polite; I was given a menu, and someone immediately took my drinks order. Examining the extensive menu, my eye was drawn to the specials. I normally pick a Dhansak as my go-to curry, but I wanted to try something different tonight.

It would feel wrong not to try the Maharajah Signature dish: whole garlic, onions, fresh coriander and fresh lemon juice described as having a “special sweet and sour flavour”.

The other option from the specials menu I tried was a paneer. It was described as a medium spiced curry with whole garlic, onions, fresh coriander and fresh lemon juice.

I also ordered coconut rice, pilau rice, and a naan bread as a treat. The food came sizzling hot in individual dishes and smelled wonderfully aromatic.

The curries both had a much more sophisticated flavour than at your typical curry house. A harmonious blend of spices made for a melt-in-the-mouth sauce, with a subtle heat from tiny slices of ruby-coloured chillies.

I would definitely recommend the restaurant’s signature dish. It was not too garlicky and the fresh herbs and spices were delicious.

The other curry, a vegetable paneer, was also wonderful and every tender bite of cheese had an irresistible creamy texture. According to the menu, the paneer is homemade and it certainly tasted that way.

For two people with drinks but without starters, it was £50. There was more than enough food and it was leagues ahead in terms of quality.

Maharajah is definitely somewhere I’d treat the relatives or visit for a special occasion.

Last weekend, I was lucky enough to have a perfect day out thanks to a bus that took me direct from Hull to North Yorkshire.

While there are plenty of things to do in Hull, if you need a dose of fresh air it is well worth checking out the North York Moors M1 and M3 return bus services which recently returned for the summer season.

Departing from Hull Interchange at 9am every Sunday and Bank Holiday, it takes you all the way to picturesque North Yorkshire via Cottingham, Beverley, and Driffield. At its terminus in Pickering, there is a 30-minute break where passengers can use the toilet before the bus turns into the M3 service and takes you deeper into the moors, with the terminus at Danby.

I boarded at Hull Interchange at 9am on Sunday for the first M1 service of the season. A single ticket costs £3 and a Moors Rover ticket (which lets you change for the M3 service) is £10 for an adult and £3 for a child.

While it’s possible to make the same Hull to Pickering journey by car in one hour and 20 minutes, I enjoyed the serenity of the two-hour ride, looking at the changing landscapes through the window of the top deck and listening to music on my headphones.

Once in Pickering, I bought a fresh pasty and takeaway tea from Botham’s which also has a tearoom. I then headed to the North Yorkshire Moors Railway.

The beautifully restored 1930s themed station was a real treat. Tickets were more than I initially expected, £15 for a return to Newton Dale Halt, but I imagine the railway costs a lot in upkeep.

Onboard, the train has a wood panelled interior and squashy sofa-like seats. The route was scenic through forest and hilly landscapes and if you stay for the full journey it goes all the way to Whitby on the coast.

Newton Dale Halt is a request stop and was blissfully quiet. There is no traffic, so the area is often described as a “walker’s paradise”.

I then followed a trail south towards Levisham, with the aim of having lunch at the tearoom and then catching the train back to Pickering.

The path was well maintained for the most part and it was wonderful to be completely alone in the forest. The walk also took me through hills and cottage-style farms.

At one point, I met a pensive-looking cow staring out at the landscape. There were also a couple of sheep running free on the path – luckily they seemed to know their way home.

It was then it began to pour with rain. The weather forecast had predicted rain so it was not a massive surprise and I’d brought waterproofs so it did not put a dampener on the day.

Thankfully, it was a short rain shower and I dried out in the sunshine. At Levisham, I’d hoped to have lunch at the tearoom, but it was shut which was disappointing because there is nothing else nearby.

It was not a disaster because there was a train going back to Pickering just 10 minutes later, so I hopped aboard. In Pickering there was a tractor rally going on which was fun to watch.

Now very hungry, I got lunch at The Ropery Cafe, including a superb chocolate and orange cake. The M1 bus back to Hull was in Pickering, opposite the library in The Ropery, long before the 5:15pm departure time.

This was was a relief because there is no information or timetable for M1 at the bus stops so I was a bit worried about being in the right place. The journey back to Hull was equally peaceful and I got back around 7.30pm when it was still light,

Overall it was the best day out I can remember in a long time and could not have been more simple. Next time, I will try the M3 service from Pickering to The Moors Centre in Danby for the full moorland experience.

Humber Street Sesh, the region’s biggest festival of independent music, is set to attract audiences nationwide with a line-up featuring some top industry bands from across the country.

This year will be the 13th iteration of the award-winning, annual music festival. It will takes place in the Hull Marina area on Saturday, August 2.

Humber Street Sesh continues to provide a platform for regional emerging musicians and artists, but this year festival organisers have deliberately included more emerging bands from across the country, currently grabbing music industry attention, to perform among the 100-plus acts at the festival. Mark Page, festival artistic director, said: “While we want to maintain the festival’s community feel and will always showcase the best regional emerging artists, we’ve shifted the balance to include more UK industry bands in the line-up this year.

“This’ll be beneficial on all levels – it will help inspire the local music scene; help us reach new audiences and stimulate music tourism to the city; ultimately helping our ambition to establish Humber Street Sesh as a recognised UK festival.” Just a few of the standout industry bands tipped to pull in the crowds from outside the area include festival headliner, The Howl and The Hum, an alternative indie band from York, characterised by their lyrical vulnerability, and a genre defying sound that encompasses folk, indie, country and electronica – a Main Stage must-see.

Nottingham’s contemporary alt-indie band, Divorce, have been captivating audiences across the UK and Europe with their trademark theatricality and musicality at live shows and are championed by press and radio as one of the most exciting artists to watch out for. Festival goers can catch them at James Legal Sesh Stage.

DEAFDEAFDEAF, a five-piece, post-punk band from Manchester, will undoubtedly ignite audiences at the James Legal Sesh Stage. Their live set has been lauded by VOICE as a performance that ‘… exhibits chaos and intensity that has to be experienced first-hand to truly appreciate the immense talents of DEAFDEAFDEAF”.

Avalanche Party, the critically acclaimed garage-punk band hail from the North Yorkshire Moors, will be one of the hottest bands to grace the Hull Trains Dead Bod Stage. They have garnered some superlative accolades from the music industry.

BBC Radio 1 called them “the most exciting rock & roll band in the UK right now”, while LOUDER THAN WAR said: “An absolute tour de force, their boundless energy and breathtaking performance truly sets them apart. By far one of the most thrilling bands, you will see in the UK.”

As Hull hopes to be recognised as a UNESCO Creative City of Music on resubmission of the bid in 2027, it is timely that Humber Street Sesh, after suffering some bruising years with the pandemic, and withstanding constant urban developments, now feels steadier on its feet and has raised its game for 2025 with a line-up to rival any UK grassroots emerging festival, the organisers said.

Cllr Rob Pritchard, portfolio holder for culture and leisure at Hull City Council, commented on the festival’s 2025 programme and the significance of Humber Street Sesh in Hull’s next bid to become a UNESCO Creative City of Music. He said: “Humber Street Sesh is a significant date in Hull’s event calendar, with this year’s line-up shaping up to be the best yet. As we move forward and look to our next bid to UNESCO, its events like Sesh that really help to elevate the city and ensure we are firmly on the UK music scene map.”

Hull Trains, long-term festival partner and sponsor of the Dead Bod Stage, has again pledged support with an offer of free travel for festival goers to boost music tourism to the city. The details will be released soon.

Louise Mendham, service delivery director at Hull Trains, said: “We’re thrilled to once again be proud partners of this brilliant event. We’re passionate about being an active part of the local communities that we serve and it’s great to see the Humber Street Sesh going from strength to strength every year.

“Our offer of free travel for those heading to the festival is our way of supporting the team in making it an even greener event. Rail travel is the greenest mode of long-distance transport, with just one train removing hundreds of cars from the road.”

Mark was enthusiastic about the festival’s future direction. He said: “With the exceptional line-up of industry bands from across the UK and the best in regional emerging music this year, we hope to raise the festival’s profile, and move it further along the path to national recognition.”

Being a person of a certain age, there was so much I recognised from Hull Truck Theatre’s new show, right down to the furniture that helped to make up the set.

I grew up with teak and the first cassette tape recorder my family ever owned appeared to have teleported straight from my past and into the spotlight of Stage 1. There was going to be so much more that felt poignantly familiar during this new production, To Have and To Hold, written by Yorkshire playwright Richard Bean.

This bittersweet comedy-drama will have you laughing and crying almost in equal measure. Set in the East Yorkshire village of Wetwang, the play explores the challenges of growing older and follows couple, retired policeman Jack Kirk (played by Ian Bartholomew) and his wife, Florence (Paula Wilcox) who, after 60 years of marriage, have perfected the fine art of bickering.

Their particular frailties are beginning to show but with the support of local wheeler dealer, “Rhubarb Eddie” (Adrian Hood), and niece, Pamela (Sara Beharrell) – plus a stairlift that is cause for much hilarity in the opening scene – they are muddling along just fine. As their children Rob (Stephen Tompkinson) and Tina (Rebecca Johnson) arrive home to help put their affairs in order, chaos descends on the household.

Gripes are aired, and secrets are uncovered. It appears a trusting Jack and Florence may have fallen victim to their own faith in humankind; there are certain things that family members want to get – and may have already got – their hands on.

The question is, will Jack and Florence be left alone to live out the rest of their days in their own kind of peace (there’s a very touching scene between the two where Jack has a specific and very personal request of his wife, after he dies), or will their grown-up offspring have other ideas about what is best for their ageing parents?

I felt a shared kinship with fellow audience members who were no doubt thinking, ‘yes, I know exactly what that’s like’, as we laughed. By the same token, in the heart-breaking later scenes, you could not hear a pin drop as those same ‘I know exactly what that’s like’ thoughts came to mind and tears sprang to eyes.

Paula and Ian were amazing as “old” people, and very believable. I loved (and in one case learned to loathe – you will understand why if you go to see it) all of the characters and the plot. The cast fully deserved the ovation they received.

Playwright Richard was invited to the stage by actor Ian. Richard paid tribute to the late Mike Bradwell, founder of the theatre, who died last month, and he asked for a final round of applause in his memory.

A Coronation Street couple of the past are appearing on stage in Hull in a brand new comedy.

Paula Wilcox, who played Elaine Jones (formerly Philippa Metcalfe) in the ITV soap, and Ian Bartholomew, who took the role of her abusive first husband, Geoff Metcalfe, are being reunited for To Have and To Hold, which opened at Hull Truck Theatre last week and is running until May 24. The pair play Florence and Jack who, after 60 years of marriage, have successfully mastered the fine art of bickering.

It is set in the picturesque village of Wetwang, in rural East Yorkshire, the play having been penned by Richard Bean, writer of international smash hit One Man, Two Guvnors, along with The Hypocrite and 71 Coltman Street. It has given the opportunity to Ian to fulfil a long-held wish of playing to a Hull audience – you can find out more in this Q&A session with the two lead actors below.

Paula

You played Elaine Jones in Coronation Street, who also was a mother to Tim who she had in 1972 with her husband Geoff Metcalfe, played by Ian Bartholomew. How has it been working with Ian again after all these years?

It was about four years ago that I first worked with Ian, on Coronation Street. We had about four scenes together, and he was brilliant. He still is! I can’t wait for you to see us – together again at last.

(Image: hulltruck.co.uk)

Where did you start your acting career?

I joined the National Youth Theatre in London while still at school. I had a good part in a new play by Peter Terson, and was talent spotted to audition for a new TV series. I got the part, Beryl in The Lovers for Granada Television, and I have been working ever since.

How has it been playing a character much older than yourself? Have you been inspired by anyone in your own life when creating the character of Florence?

Both my grannies died a long time ago, and I certainly remember how one in particular shared a characteristic with Florence. She used to get the grandchildren mixed up, and it was well known that she’d take a few goes at your name before she finally landed on the right one. I was ‘Pam-Pat, Paula’ for years.

Richard Bean’s writing is so spot on, though, that you feel you know the characters from the moment you start to read the play.

How do you see local audience responding to the play To Have and to Hold?

I hope the audience will respond as I did when I first read the script: I laughed aloud many times and wiped away a tear at others.

Ian

Are there any similarities between the characters Geoff, in Coronation Street, and the character of Jack in To Have and To Hold?

They’re both blokes who look a lot like me. Apart from that, no. Geoff was an unpleasant, obnoxious, lying, manipulative, misogynistic bully, and Jack isn’t.

He’s an ex-copper who’s long retired, decent, old, very ill and grumpy, but still sharp and emotionally connected to his family and his past. He gives Florence his wife a rough ride, but after 60 years of marriage, he still loves her deeply but doesn’t always know how to show it anymore.”

How will performing in To Have and to Hold change when you have an audience in front of you? Do you feed off a good audience?

The final ingredient of any play in the theatre is the audience. After all, that’s why actors do it, otherwise they’d just be shouting to themselves in empty rooms, and where’s the fun in that?

You must let the audience in and take them on a journey with you. They tell you when it’s funny, sad, exciting, or just plain dull. So, when you’re out there, for better or for worse, you ignore the audience at your peril.

And yes, a good audience will feed you right royally, but only if you’re giving them something just as good in return. It’s a two-way thing.

Have you ever performed in Hull before? How do you find it being in this city?

I’ve never performed here before, but I’ve been aware of Hull Truck since Mike Bradwell’s early days and always harboured a wish to play here. And my wish has come true!

It’s a lovely place to work, and I’m enjoying the city very much. I was born and brought up by the sea, so I’m looking forward to getting some time to dive into the maritime history of the town and its people.

What advice would you give to new actors wanting to enter the industry?

Don’t! No, not really. I’d say, ‘Remember to have fun, be kind, generous and respectful, everyone has their story to tell’. And while you should take the work seriously, never, ever take yourself seriously, for that way madness lies. Oh yeah, and look after your teeth.

To Have and To Hold is running until Saturday, May 24, with tickets on sale now.

I have finally tried the legendary Hull Chinese takeaway subject to rave reviews from locals.

Last December, Hull Live readers voted Mr Chiu as their favourite Chinese takeaway. It got an impressive 558 votes, with the four next-best takeaways receiving 151, 120, 88, and 75 votes respectively.

That said, I was definitely expecting something special when I place my very first Mr Chiu order. Unlike the majority of takeaways in Hull, Mr Chiu does not appear to have a way to view a menu and order online.

However, there is a phone number which I rang and the female staff member was helpful; informing me I could collect or order takeaway – and it is cash-only.

I was glad I checked because I rarely carry cash and don’t live near an ATM, so I made a diversion en-route. Mr Chiu itself is on a bit of a dessert island in terms of amnesties, situated on the A1033 opposite the impressive Salt End Chemicals Park.

The interior was clean and spacious, with a large front counter for making and collecting orders and bench-style seating. The menu had many typical British favourites: chow mein, aromatic duck, satay dishes, and curry sauce.

My usual order when I get Chinese is Mapo because it is light and spicy, although I’m also partial to black bean sauce which has a rich umami flavour. I couldn’t spot those on the menu, so thought I’d try something I hadn’t had in about a decade: sweet and sour.

I also ordered some vegetable spring rolls, chow mein noodles, and mixed vegetable fried rice. It took less than 20 minutes to be ready, which I thought was pretty fast.

When I unboxed it all at home, I was staggered at the portion size of mixed vegetable fried rice, which could feed three to four people if used as a side. It was just as well: £6.90 is definitely at the pricier end of the spectrum.

The sweet and sour was a bit blander than I expected, but I was glad it wasn’t sickly sweet. The vegetables in all the dishes mostly consisted of carrot, green pepper, and copious amounts of onion.

I like onion, but these huge, crunchy chunks were rather pungent, so I picked out a lot of it to try and taste other flavours. The spring rolls were probably my favourite part of the meal, the batter was doughy rather than crispy but they tasted good.

Thanks to the huge portions of noodles and rice, there were plenty of leftovers to stick in the fridge. The food was actually even better the next day; the flavours developed a bit more and the onion mellowed in taste and softened in texture thanks to the microwave.

A free and family-friendly science show is coming to Hull.

Science of Superheroes Live Stage Show will be performed at Hymers College on Sunday, May 11, from 3pm to 4pm. The fun and interactive show by The Society for Radiological Protection is aimed at children in Years 3-6.

Tickets must be reserved in advance and are available on a first come, first served basis. There are 250 free tickets to give away, with a maximum of four per request.

Guests can simply email how many tickets they would like together with any access requirements to admin@srp-uk.org to apply. Each group must consist of at least one responsible adult; younger siblings are welcome as part of the group.

A spokeswoman for The Society for Radiological Protection (SRP) said: “We have it on good authority that Superman, the Incredible Hulk, Spider-Gwen and Captain America are all planning to visit Hull on 11th May!”

Explaining the message behind the show, she added: “It’s a brilliant time to be a scientist. There are an awful lot of challenges to face and the ability of science to address these is something we need to keep on pushing forwards.

“We’d like our audience to think a little bit about the science alongside the fun superhero bit. And maybe inspire them to think about doing more about science in their futures.”

The Society for Radiological Protection are visiting Hull for the first time for their annual conference. The event is moved around the country because members are from all over the UK.

With more than 2,000 members, The Society for Radiological Protection is the largest radiological protection society in the world, excluding the USA. The Society is a learned focus for understanding radiation hazards and solutions, and for providing information to government, industry and the public on radiation protection.

The Society operates in the fields of medicine, the nuclear power cycle, research and other settings that use hazardous radiation. It also serves the public by providing information about radiation protection and associated careers.

A Hull city centre hotel resembled Mos Eisley spaceport as characters from a galaxy far, far away flocked to celebrate a Star Wars-themed convention.

Aptly taking place on ‘Star Wars Day’ – May the 4th – hundreds headed to the DoubleTree by Hilton hotel for Star-Con. Darth Vader, stormtroopers, Princess Leia, Yoda, Chewbacca and many more characters filled the venue for the convention organised by Luxx Events.

Husband and wife duo Amanda and Peter Marriott, said: “We both love Star Wars and what’s better than running an event to celebrate the world of Star Wars, and that’s when Star-Con became a reality. This is our second year in Hull and we are once again excited to bring this event back to all those who have the same love and passion as we do for all things geeky, especially Star Wars”.

As well as cosplay characters and movie-set backdrops from various movie-themed locations, guests could also enjoy having their picture taken on an X-Wing fighter, with loveable droid R2-D2 or on a Land Speeder bike. Star Wars merchandise, comics and tabletop gaming was also available throughout the day and visitors could learn moves from the Saber School workshops.

Fans could also meet people who worked on the films including English actor Ross Sambridge who was a body double for Andy Serkis as Snoke in The Last Jedi, and played a Wookiee slave in Solo: A Star Wars Story. Others attending included James Taylor, a regular on set who has taken on roles such as a stormtrooper and as a double for Captain Phasma in the death scene in The Last Jedi, and Trevor Butterfield who has played roles such as an Imperial officer and a stormtrooper.
