The roles are being advertised ahead of the rollout of the Simpler Recycling scheme with a recruitment event being held this weekend
A recruitment drive is underway in Hull with 70 new jobs being created to expand the council’s waste management team. The city’s Streetscene Services are advertising the roles ahead of the national rollout of Simpler Recycling in March next year.
This will see all local authorities required to collect core recyclables from every household, including weekly food waste collections. As this will result in an increased demand, Hull City Council is expanding the waste team to meet this and improve service delivery.
The 70 new vacancies in waste management include 60 loader positions and ten driver chargehand roles. The salaries range between £25,583 and £32,061 with a waste operations team leader being offered up to £35,412.
A recruitment event is set to take place this Saturday (October 4) between 10am and 1pm at Staveley House, in Stockholm Road, Hull. Organised in partnership with the council’s Employment Hub, this will give potential recruits the chance to meet some of the staff in the waste and recycling team, take a look at the vehicles used in daily operations, and learn more about the roles available.
Councillor Charles Quinn, portfolio holder for environment at Hull City Council, said: “Simpler Recycling marks a significant step forward in how we manage waste across the city. By recruiting and training new staff now, we’re ensuring Hull is ready to meet these new standards.
“I encourage anyone interested to come along and find out more about joining our dedicated waste team.”
To apply for a role, visit the Hull City Council jobs website. Successful applicants will start their training in January.
Currently brown bins are collected every two weeks, but the council has received £1.495m of government funding for the introduction of weekly food waste collections.
In March, Adam McArthur, head of development, performance, and open spaces at Hull City Council, said: “We are dedicated to ensuring that Hull meets the new statutory requirements for waste collection, and we are committed to implementing a service that is both efficient and environmentally responsible.
“The approved weekly mixed brown bin collections will not only help us comply with Government legislation but also significantly enhance our recycling efforts and reduce overall waste. By adopting this new brown waste service, we aim to create a healthier, safer, and more sustainable city for all residents.
“We appreciate the community’s support and understanding as we implement this new statutory service.”
