“Tonight we take this award home for Hull, for our community, for our families, for every beautiful soul we have lost”

A mental health and suicide prevention charity has been recognised at this year’s National Diversity Awards. Hull charity Mysterious Minds clinched the incredible achievement of The Community Organisation Award from over 85,000 nominees and 126 finalists in 15 categories.

The win recognises their dedication to advancing equality, diversity and inclusion. Winners were announced on Friday, September 19, in the stunning Liverpool Anglican Cathedral at a ceremony was hosted by broadcaster Clare Balding, CBE.

Mysterious Minds was founded by Chelsey Dalee in 2017 after losing her son’s father, Jamie. In memory of her daughter, Mollie, Dawn Stansfield later came aboard.

Accepting the award, Dawn said: “On behalf of Mysterious Minds, we are deeply humbled and truly overwhelmed to receive this amazing award tonight. Mysterious Minds is run by two average women living two ordinary lives brought together in the most devastating way through grief and loss.

“But out of that heartbreak, something extraordinary was born: hope. Hope that no family should ever have to face the aftermath of suicide and we stand here today to say loud and clear, suicide does not discriminate and suicide does not carry stigma.

“There may be just the two of us, Chelsey and I, but we don’t do this on our own. Mysterious Minds would be nothing without the people of Hull and the extended community around us.

“The support we receive from them is nothing short of amazing. There is nothing they will not do to help us achieve what we often might feel is the impossible. This award belongs as much to them as it does to us.

“We dedicate this to every family who has trusted us to support them in their journey. You are our courage and you are our reason. Most importantly, this award honours every life stolen by suicide, so tonight we take this award home for Hull, for our community, for our families, for every beautiful soul we have lost, and together we keep holding each other up at the hardest times of our lives. Thank you to everybody.”

Mysterious Minds provide financial donations towards funerals, personalised memorial gifts and ongoing emotional support to grieving families. Entirely volunteer-led, they raise funds through raffles, community events and annual memorial days attended by hundreds of people.

In 2023, they became a registered charity and proudly increased their funeral support donation to £1700 in 2025. They also offer suicide awareness and prevention, referring people to appropriate services.

Mysterious Minds is driven by love, compassion and lived experience. It offers light in the darkest times and creating a lasting legacy of support, hope and remembrance across the community.
