The council has launched a survey as it plans ‘revitalise’ and ‘enhance’ the area
There are plans to “revitalise” Hessle Square and “enhance its overall character”. East Riding Of Yorkshire Council is encouraging residents, businesses and visitors to help shape the future of the town’s central area.
The authority has launched a four-week public engagement campaign to allow people to share their views on what this should involve. Its local growth team is working with Yorkshire-based company PWP Design Ltd to review Hessle Square and create a “welcoming focal point that can support economic growth and encourage pride in the community”.
The overall goal is to “revitalise the public space, address issues and enhance the overall character of the square”.
On the survey, the council says: “We want to hear your views on Hessle Square — how it feels today, what you like about it, and what could be improved. Public spaces are more than just roads and pavements — they’re places where people meet, relax, and celebrate local life.
“Well-designed spaces can support our health, bring communities together, and make our towns feel welcoming and vibrant.”
The four-week engagement will run until Friday, October 17 and can be completed online or through paper surveys available at Hessle Town Council offices, in South Lane.
Councillor Gary McMaster, East Riding of Yorkshire Council cabinet member for planning, housing, and infrastructure, said “We encourage people to get involved and have their voice. This is a fantastic opportunity to help shape the future shape of Hessle town centre.”
The project is funded by the UK government through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund (UKSPF).
The UKSPF is a central pillar of the government’s Levelling Up agenda and provides £2.6 billion of funding for local investment by March 2025. The fund aims to improve pride in place and increase life chances across the UK by investing in three priorities: communities and place, supporting local business and people and skills.
