An organic farm in East Yorkshire is holding an open day with apples at the heart of a special seasonal celebration. Carr House Farm will welcome visitors on Sunday, September 28, from 10am to 3pm.

It is free entry to apple open day, with a woodland walk that families can enjoy together- the main path is suitable for prams and wheelchairs – and well-behaved dogs on leads are also welcome. A Gruffalo Trail is a bit more uneven but great fun for children.

Makara Morris Dancers will also be entertaining with a display at midday. The farm owners, the Sellers family, said: “We are delighted to welcome the morris dancers back again to lead a dance; this is always a super spectacle to watch.”

Visitors can also enjoy apple picking. The farm grows a range of organic heritage varieties, including:

  • Eating apples – Cevaal, Sunset, Winston, Ashmead Kernel, Egremont Russet
  • Cooking apples – Lord Derby, Peasgood Nonsuch

A selection of buckets will be on hand for pickers but it will be helpful if people can bring along some of their own containers. Pick-your-own heritage organic apples (any variety) costs £6 per kilo; ready-picked apples will cost £7 per kilo.

The Sellers family said: “We will be offering you a chance to press your own apple juice, using our press. Anyone wanting to have a go can either pick your own selection of apples from our orchard, creating your own unique blend of juice, or you can use our own ready-picked apples.

“We will then help you to press your apples and bottle the juice to take home. Each press makes around two bottles of juice.” Apple pressing is a ticketed activity and pre-paid costs £15 per press and on-the-day is £18 per press.

Carr House Farm’s award winning Side Oven Bakery products will be available for pre-order. It will be serving takeaway teas/coffees and cake on the day.

There will be a small quantity of breads available to buy on the day, but it is advisable to pre-order if there is anything you particularly require. Carr House Farm is at Foston on the Wolds, Driffield, YO25 8BS. Suitable clothing and footwear is advised.
