The Tigers were worthy winners against one of the promotion favourites
Frustrated Will Still branded Southampton’s 3-1 loss at Hull City as ridiculous, and issued an apology to the travelling supporters after seeing his side outthought at the MKM Stadium.
Goals from Kyle Joseph, John Lundstram and Oli McBurnie had the hosts deservedly 3-0 up before Adam Armstrong stepped off the bench to fire home a consolation goal in the 95th minute.
The Tigers’ second home win of the season sees them move to within two points of the play-offs after just six games, while the Saints are two above the drop zone.
“It’s incredibly disappointing. I think for large parts of the game, we were totally in control and doing the right things,” a visibly frustrated Still said after his side were booed off at half and full-time in the MKM Stadium rain. “We did the right approach work, but football isn’t won in between both boxes. They’re won in both boxes, and we haven’t done well in either.
“The first goal is really disappointing. It’s a cross from really deep. We’ve not made first contact, we’ve not followed up, we’re not ready to defend.
“So again, we’ve gifted a goal. We’ve come back out of the dressing room, pressing, we were totally in control, and we were the biggest threat. But we were not finishing our actions, not getting your first contact in the box, that final bit isn’t quite right. And then we give them a second goal.
“Losing the ball on the halfway line, not defending the transition properly, and then just topped it off by conceding on a set piece, which is ridiculous. But, you know, it must be my responsibility to get that right, and I’m not quite getting that right for the moment, so I’ll take it on me.
“We will look to move forward as soon as we can. We’ve got to go again on Tuesday and on Saturday against the leaders, and we need to get it right.
“We have to because that isn’t good enough. So apologies to the fans who have travelled all that way for that. That’s about all I can say. Hull capitalised on what we didn’t do very well and scored three goals, but yeah, it’s really poor from me, really poor from the team. Not good enough.”
