The ‘fully accessible pod’ was ‘much needed’
Brough station now has a toilet with the launch of a new “fully accessible pod”. The East Yorkshire train station, which is operated by TransPennine Express (TPE), did not have any toilet facilities but this has changed following a £135,000 investment.
The facility includes handrails, a stoma shelf, and a baby changing unit, to ensure “it meets the needs of a wide range of customers”. Access to the toilet is granted by the user pressing the ‘Bell’ button to contact the ticket office. Staff will then check their ticket and grant entry.
The pod features two pull cords and four low-level panic buttons. Triggering these sets off an audible alarm in the ticket office and flashes a beacon above the door, ensuring staff are alerted even when on the platforms.
Chris Nutton, major projects & TRU director said: “We’re delighted to bring toilet facilities to Brough station for the very first time. This investment is an important step in improving the station for our customers, creating a facility that is not only much needed but also accessible, safe, and inclusive for everyone.”
The project was delivered by MJM as principal contractor with Vextrix acting as contract administrator and principal designer.
TransPennine Express says the new facility is “part of TPE’s wider commitment to accessibility across its network”. It added: “Earlier this year, all toilets at TPE stations were upgraded to be stoma friendly, ensuring facilities are practical, inclusive, and designed to meet the needs of customers.”
