The store is currently scheduled to open on Saturday, November 29
Popular discount retailer B&M is preparing to open a new store at the site of the former Homebase in Hessle. The Sainsbury Way site is now able to sell a wider array of products after a now-approved planning application was submitted to Hull City Council earlier this year.
The planning application sought permission for the site to act as a mixed-use store, selling the likes of pet food, toiletries, toys, etc. At the time, documents submitted to the council stated that the site would be suitable for one of the following retailers:
- B&M
- Home Bargains
- Poundstretcher
- Poundland
- The Range
Following speculation over the future of the store and who would take on the vacant site, B&M has now submitted a licensing application to Hull City Council. B&M have told the Hull Daily Mail that their new store is currently scheduled to open on Saturday, November 29.

The application submitted to the council seeks permission for the store to be open 7 days a week with opening times of 7am to 11pm. It also seeks permission to sell alcohol.
Prior to its closure earlier this year, Homebase had operated at the site for over 40 years. The store first opened in 1984, within a week of the neighbouring Sainsbury’s opening.
Documents from the approved planning application argued that a discount retail store, such as B&M, opening at the former Homebase site would not hinder other nearby stores. It was said: “Whilst it is acknowledged that a B&M and Poundland store are located within Hessle Road District Centre, these are smaller ‘high street’ format stores.”
The licensing application will now be considered by Hull City Council. Anyone wishing to oppose or comment on the application must give notice in writing by October 9.
