Hull City’s late, late show on Saturday at Swansea City ensured the Tigers ended their two-game losing run and returned from South Wales with a fully deserved point, and it impressed David Prutton.

John Egan’s 97th-minute strike in front of the travelling supporters saw City claim a 2-2 draw to set them up nicely for Saturday’s home clash with Southampton, who themselves were held to a dull 0-0 draw against arch-rivals Portsmouth at St Mary’s on Sunday afternoon.

Almost a month on from their last MKM Stadium appearance on August 23, when they were soundly beaten by Blackburn Rovers after illness ripped through the camp in the build-up, the Tigers will be keen to return to winning ways.

“Having watched the goals and a fair portion of the game, and you read the reports talking about nicking a point and all that type of stuff, City just forced Swansea back and back and back,” Prutton said on the 1904 Club podcast. “Swansea got deeper and deeper, and you get a sense in a game such as that where you’ve not put the game to bed in the first half, there’s still jeopardy in the game, which absolutely turned to be the case.

“You chuck John Egan up top to cause a bit of chaos; he does exactly that and he manages to finish to make sure that City get a point. There’s so much to like and be positive about. City probably created more chances against Swansea than Swansea have had to endure across the first few games of the season. McBurnie’s goal is a thing of beauty; it’s a glorious bit of play and shows that if the quality is good, then you’ve got men desperate to get on it.

“Joe’s (Gelhardt) header, which was superbly saved. A towering header from someone you wouldn’t necessarily assume it from, and on another day, finds the bottom corner. Lots to like, lots to be positive about the reaction to two defeats in different manners.”

City dropped to 20th in the early Championship table despite a positive result in South Wales, but victory on Saturday would see them rise significantly up the standings.

Boss Sergej Jakirovic will almost certainly hand home debuts to Amir Hadziahmetovic, Darko Gyabi and Enis Destan while Liam Millar could make his long-awaited return from an ACL injury against the Saints.

In the latest episode of the 1904 Club, Baz and Kathryn were joined by Burnsy and Hull-born Prutton to discuss the key subjects from the weekend, and get the lowdown on Saturday’s opponents in East Yorkshire.
