Ruben Selles’ poor start to the new season has brought an end to his short-lived tenure at Sheffield United, following the Blades’ dismal 5-0 thrashing at Ipswich Town on Friday night.

United are bottom of the Championship after five straight defeats having scored just one goal and conceded 12. They were also dumped out of the Carabao Cup, meaning Selles has lost all six competitive games, and has now been sacked by the Bramall Lane owners COH Sports, following weekend talks.

Selles, who guided Hull City to survival on the final day of last season, was appointed in the summer after Chris Wilder left following the play-off final defeat to Sunderland, to the surprise of supporters in the Steel City.

There’s now a growing expectation that Wilder could make a sensational return to the Bramall Lane dugout and replace the Spaniard just five league games into the new campaign.

“If you don’t win football matches, your position is going to be discussed, not only for me but for every coach in the world. We have to keep working hard until the end,” the former Tigers boss told Sky Sports at Portman Road after Jaden Philogene’s hat-trick condemned the hopeless Blades to their latest defeat.

“The owners have been supporting me until today. I haven’t spoken to them after the game. I’m not worried about that, I’m just worried about how we can do things better. I’m the first one to give pressure to myself. I believe in myself. I will always be in front of anything that has my name.

“We are not going to solve anything tonight but we have to analyse. The good thing about football is you have another game in seven days and it’s another opportunity.”
