The Prime Minister sacked Lord Mandelson after emails he sent to Jeffrey Epstein were revealed
Lord Peter Mandelson could be stripped of his post as the High Steward of Hull. The key figure in Tony Blair’s New Labour regime has been sacked as the UK’s ambassador to the US after emails and other correspondence with paedophile Jeffrey Epstein were revealed.
The Leader of Hull City Council, Councillor Mike Ross, and the Leader of the council’s Labour group, Councillor Daren Hale, along with the council’s Independent Group, have jointly called for Lord Mandelson to be stripped of the role that he has held since 2013. In a statement, Councillor Ross said: “In light of recent developments, with agreement from the other political groups on the council, we will put forward a motion at next week’s Full Council meeting calling for the High Steward role to be removed from Lord Mandelson.”
The Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer, who picked the Labour grandee to be the UK’s representative in Washington, made the decision to sack him after emails showed the peer sent supportive messages even as Epstein faced jail for sex offences. The Foreign Office said the emails showed “the depth and extent of Peter Mandelson’s relationship with Jeffrey Epstein is materially different from that known at the time of his appointment”.
The Prime Minister found the emails “reprehensible”, Downing Street has said. James Roscoe will be the interim ambassador to the US and has taken over with immediate effect, Downing Street has also confirmed.
The position of High Steward dates back to 1853 but was ended in 1974 until Lord Mandelson was given the role in 2013. Lord Mandelson’s grandfather, Herbert Morrison, also held the role.
