City’s bank balance has received a welcome injection of cash
Hull City have been boosted by an injection of almost £15m into their coffers to help the club’s financial picture, after owner Acun Ilicali converted a loan into equity, reducing the overall debt to the Turkish businessman.
City’s financial position has come under significant scrutiny in recent months after a flurry of late payments to suppliers and other football clubs landed them in hot water with the EFL.
A delay in payment to Aston Villa for the loan transfer of Louie Barry in January saw the Tigers hit with a three-window fee restriction by the EFL at the start of July, which was later reduced to two on appeal, with the threat of the third window being activated if seven days of late payments were reached before next July.
That meant City were unable to spend on transfer or loan fees during the recent summer window, or in January. As it stands, they’ll be able to trade normally next summer. Despite that, however, they still enjoyed a productive transfer period, signing 12 players.
The Tigers did turn down a £10m bid from Coventry City in August for star defender Charlie Hughes, which Ilicali felt was a major show of ambition from the club.
Fans had raised significant concerns about the off-field situation, but the influx of just under £15m will be a big boost to the Championship club’s ongoing cash flow, and they’ll now hope the news will alleviate those concerns.
“Hull City can confirm that a portion of its existing shareholder loan has been converted into equity as part of the ongoing efforts to further strengthen the club’s financial position,” it said in a statement on Tuesday. “This transaction, nearly £15m, reflects chairman Acun Ilicali’s continued commitment to the long-term growth and stability of Hull City. By converting a portion of the outstanding loan into equity, the club has reduced its overall debt levels, improved its balance sheet, and enhanced its financial flexibility to support future on and off-field success. As always, we will continue to communicate with our supporters on all important matters at the club.”
