Willie Peters says he hasn’t had any conversations with Australia head coach Kevin Walters just yet – but insists he’ll definitely pick up if the phone rings ahead of this year’s Ashes series.

Walters is keen to tap into the expertise of Australian coaches currently working in Super League, with Peters, Brad Arthur, and John Cartwright all previously mentioned as potential additions to his backroom staff.

The three-match Ashes series will take place this autumn, with games scheduled for Wembley, Everton’s new ground, and Leeds’ Headingley Stadium. Walters has already made contact with Hull FC head coach Cartwright, and plans to reach out to others soon.

“I haven’t spoken to him as of yet,” Hull KR boss Peters explained.

“If the phone rings – I don’t have Kevin Walters’ number – but I’m sure I’ll answer it. I’m certainly not going to hang up on him!”

Meanwhile, Leeds Rhinos head coach Arthur has ruled himself out of any serious involvement, citing family commitments as his top priority.

“I haven’t spoken to Kev. It would be a real honour to be involved in that – but I’ve made the decision that I’m going to put my family first,” said the former Parramatta Eels coach.

“I haven’t seen my boys in a long time, and they’re coming over in a couple of weeks to spend a month with us. I’m going to put my family first, and not my career, and so I’ve no interest in going down that path.

“I’m going to spend some family time together once the season is finished here.”

Arthur added: “I’m happy to help and give him my opinion on how I feel the game is over here, and the guys that are playing over here. Anything that I can offer, I’m happy to help. In terms of any interest in the job, I’m putting my family first.”
