Step back 50 years to a vibrant, colourful Hull city centre in the 1970s.
This remarkable set of photographs, taken by Hull Daily Mail staff photographers, was originally shot to capture the city in full colour at a time when most press images were still black and white. Forgotten for decades, the collection resurfaced during a move through the newspaper’s archives.
The images show a city before pedestrianisation, when traffic wardens directed cars in the absence of modern traffic lights. They also preserve glimpses of long-vanished shops and buildings.
Among the memories are the old Vivo supermarket chain – once boasting a handful of Hull branches before the arrival of Morrisons and Asda – as well as landmarks like the Yorkshire Bank building, Alexandre menswear shop, the road that once circled Queen’s Gardens, and the former Customs and Excise building.
