The opening night of Coldplay’s two shows in Hull was full of highlights including the band’s frontman addressing the infamous moment

Chris Martin halted proceedings during Coldplay‘s opening night at Hull’s Sewell Group Craven Park to address the infamous viral kiss-cam moment which he branded a ‘debacle’. The band delivered a spectacular debut evening in east Hull brimming with chart-toppers.

The thousands packed into the sold-out Craven Park were delighted with tracks including Viva La Vida, Paradise, Fix You and numerous others. During the 23-song set, frontman Chris Martin, 48, occasionally paused the music to engage with the band’s devoted fans.

At one moment on Monday evening, he rather mischievously referenced the notorious incident from a recent Coldplay performance in America. For those unaware, the viral footage was captured earlier this summer. It apparently showed the chief executive officer of a tech firm embracing the head of the company’s HR department during a gig at the Gillette Stadium in Massachusetts.

“Let me say hello,” Martin said, in a video you can watch at the top of this article, during the first of two evenings in Hull. “The hardcore superfans down on the floor, I see you. Thank you for letting us visit.

“We are so happy to be here. Many of you have written signs. So, I’ll take some time to try and read some signs. Then we’ll see what happens.

“First of all (sign reads) ‘three times in three months’, You were at that Boston gig. Well, okay, thank you for coming again after that debacle.”

Many laughs followed from the audience. Later, the charismatic frontman spoke again to the crowd bringing the ‘kiss cam’ into play.

He stated: “We’ve been doing this a long time (stopping shows to talk to fans) and it is only recently that it became a…yeah. So yeah, life throws you lemons and you’ve got to make lemonade. So, we are going to keep doing it because we are going to meet some of you.”
