One of the Tigers’ summer signings has suffered an injury setback
Hull City have been rocked by the news that summer signing Semi Ajayi will miss at least the next month after sustaining a hamstring injury.
Ajayi, who delivered a dominant display at Coventry City on Saturday, reported some discomfort in his hamstring after the game in the Midlands.
While the initial prognosis suggested it was not serious, with him left out of City‘s Carabao Cup exit at Wrexham as a precaution, a scan has revealed further damage and it’s expected he’ll miss the next four to six weeks.
The news comes as a big blow to the Tigers, but also to Ajayi, who thought the struggles of last term were behind him, which saw him play only 15 times due to two separate spells out with hamstring issues.
Thankfully for City, a chunk of that time will come during the international break, but Ajayi’s enforced absence will be keenly felt by Sergej Jakirovic, given how impressive he has been since arriving at the beginning of pre-season.
It’s understood Ajayi’s enforced absence will not change the club’s plans at this stage but things could change at the back end of the transfer market. The Tigers have John Egan, Charlie Hughes and Akin Famewo available, while John Lundstram and teenager Cathal McCarthy can fill in if required.
The worry for City is that Famewo, Egan and Hughes all missed long periods of last season through injury and they’ll hope those issues are not repeated.
Speaking after the opening day draw at the CBS Arena, Ajayi told Hull Live that he felt in good shape, having endured a miserable season last term, again hampered by hamstring injuries.
“Yeah, confident,” he said when asked how things had been going. I’m happy to be here and I’m really confident in the squad that we’ve got and I’m just looking forward to having a great season for Hull City.”
