Akin Famewo’s move to Hull City will have come as a hammer blow to stricken Championship side Sheffield Wednesday, according to pundit Lee Hendrie.

London-born defender Famewo turned down Wednesday’s contract offer at the end of the season and sealed a move to their Yorkshire rivals City, who themselves have had their own issues with the EFL this summer.

The 26-year-old enjoyed a terrific start to last season with the Owls before a muscle injury ruled him out for a prolonged period of time, much to the dismay of those at Hillsborough.

He returned towards the end of the season after missing 26 Championship outings. Wednesday tried to keep him at Hillsborough only to see him walk away at the end of June when his contract expired.

Famewo went on to make his debut for City on Tuesday night as the Tigers crashed out of the Carabao Cup on penalties, having been leading 3-1 going into added time.

Now, fellow summer arrival Semi Ajayi is injured, Famewo could be set for an extended run in Sergej Jakirovic’s team, though he’ll be cautious about overexerting him too early.

His departure is yet another cruel blow to Wednesday, who have seen their squad decimated this summer, having fallen foul of a host of EFL sanctions owing to Dejphon Chansiri’s mismanagement.

“Losing Akin Famewo to Hull (is) a massive blow, there’s no doubt,” Hendrie said in conversation with FLW. “I think you weigh up this situation at Wednesday at the moment and the likes of Windass, Famewo (losing both players amongst others), the list goes on, where they’re at and what they’re not doing.

“It just spells out massive danger, it really does. It’s now filtering through to the squad of players that are saying they didn’t want Danny Rohl there, didn’t want him back.

“I think all these problems are starting to come from the top down to the bottom now, and this is a problem, it really is. When you’re losing players, key players, there’s no doubt that they’re going to be thinking better things, particularly when the club is in such a shambolic state at the moment, it needs to be resolved.

“It needs to be resolved quickly, so the players can buy into what they’re going to do, and what they’re going to be at. And this is why players are turning their heads. It’d be a massive blow again for Sheffield Wednesday, which we keep talking about.”
