Wrexham will be left sweating on the fitness of striker Kieffer Moore ahead of Tuesday night’s meeting with Hull City in the first round of the Carabao Cup.

Moore, who signed for the Welsh side in a £2m deal from Sheffield United, made his debut in the dramatic 2-1 opening day defeat at Southampton on Saturday before disaster struck.

The 33-year-old was forced off just under 10 minutes into the second half at St Mary’s after an ankle ligament problem flared up following a shot he had at goal.

Despite trying to play on and run off the injury, the ex-City transfer target was unable to continue and was replaced by Sam Smith for the remainder of what turned out to be a sensational finish on the South Coast with Southampton scoring twice late on to come from behind and win.

Boss Phil Parkinson, the former City chief, admits he doesn’t know the extent of the injury to the Welsh international and what it means moving forward, though it’s almost certain he’ll miss their first home game since winning promotion to the Championship when the Tigers visit.

“We’ve lost Kieffer, which is obviously a blow,” Parkinson said. “His performance was outstanding, everything we know he brings to us We’ve just got to assess that injury as quickly as we can. It was his ankle ligaments.”

City meanwhile, could have winger David Akintola and full-back Brandon Williams in their squad for the trip to the principality, though those deals will need approval from the EFL before they can be considered for selection.
