The Tigers kicked off their season with a deserved point against Frank Lampard’s men
Hull City head coach Sergej Jakirovic has confirmed the club are on the cusp of signing Brandon Williams after the former Manchester United defender accepted the club’s offer.
Williams will sign a two-year contract at the MKM Stadium with the option of a third after the Tigers made him the offer at the back end of last week.
The 24-year-old full-back is expected to be in the squad that travels to Wrexham on Monday afternoon to prepare for their Carabao Cup first round clash in North Wales 24 hours later.
Jakirovic was speaking after City earned a battling 0-0 draw at promotion favourites Coventry City on Saturday as the Tigers kicked off their Championship campaign with a deserved point.
City had to withstand a significant amount of pressure throughout at the CBS Arena, but rarely looked overly troubled by the hosts, who struggled to test a well-protected Ivor Pandur.
“Yes (a good point), especially against Coventry at home because I think they have 99 per cent of the players from last season, so it’s a very tough game,” he told Hull Live.
“It was a very tough game for us because of the pressure, because it was our first game in the first round, so you never know where we are standing, but we were defensively very, very good.”
Jakirovic felt that on the occasions his side did get up the pitch that they didn’t make the most of those openings. Matt Crooks was one of those in the first half when he was played in by John Lundstram while other moments of promise were not capitalised on.
“We didn’t allow so many chances against us, but we have a lot of things to improve on in open play and our offensive play, especially in the last third. In some situations, we didn’t make good decisions.
“I have, in my mind, the Matt Crooks chance because you must take the ball one more time and shoot on the opposite side, but, OK. In the end, it’s a very promising point for us.
Though Coventry failed to carve out any real chances, City were indebted to the woodwork in the second period when Milan van Ewijk crashed an effort from distance off the angle of post and bar.
“I think the biggest problem was from the throw-in because you never know what will happen after the first ball,” he continued. “It’s very tricky. It’s dangerous, but in the end, we succeeded on the pitch; we didn’t allow so many (shots against us). OK, we were a little lucky when they hit the post. It’s a very nice shot. You cannot do anything, but this is football, it’s normal. Everyone made mistakes.”
