Emma Raducanu is looking to find her form ahead of the US Open after appointing a new coach, who will hope he can guide her to a second Grand Slam title in New York
Emma Raducanu could pocket a staggering £3.7million if she secures victory at the US Open for a second time next month.
The Flushing Meadows tournament has revealed that a record-breaking prize pot is on offer, ready to be seized by this year’s champion. Four years ago, Raducanu astounded the globe when she embarked on a magical journey to triumph in the United States as a teenager.
The British sensation, 22, is aiming to reignite her top form and shock the tennis world once more following the appointment of her new coach Francisc Roig, who previously served in Rafael Nadal’s camp.
In 2021, Raducanu bagged a whopping £1.8m for her significant win, indicating that the reward for Grand Slam success has more than doubled since then. Tournament officials announced on Wednesday that the overall pot would be the “largest purse in tennis history.”
Even within the past 12 months, the prize has seen a steep increase. Aryna Sabalenka and Jannik Sinner, the 2024 champions, were awarded £2.7m for their victories in New York.
The total pool of funds distributed to players has witnessed a notable rise of £11m from £56m to £67m, reports the Mirror. This means that victorious men’s and women’s doubles pairs, along with champions from the new mixed doubles tournament, will earn £750,000 in prize money.
First-round main-draw losers will receive compensation of £82,000. The prize money on offer significantly surpasses the rewards given at Wimbledon last month, despite the All England tournament boosting its own prize fund.
Champions Sinner and Iga Swiatek each pocketed £3m earlier this summer, and the 2025 Championships boasted a record overall pot of £53,500,000; still £13.5m shy of their US counterparts.
Raducanu is hoping her recent coaching switch will ignite a strong performance. The Brit has enlisted Nadal’s former coach, Roig, to her team ahead of the competition that commences later this month.
Mark Petchey has been offering Raducanu informal guidance since March but hasn’t been able to pledge to a full-time role due to his media commitments during the US hardcourt season.
With fresh coaching from Nadal’s ex-mentor, the team is optimistic they can elevate Raducanu’s ranking in time to secure seeding for the final Grand Slam event of 2025.
Roig comes on board just in time for Raducanu’s Cincinnati Open campaign, her last warm-up tournament. She was most recently eliminated from the Canadian Open by Amanda Anisimova, who suffered a crushing 6-0 6-0 defeat in the Wimbledon final against Swiatek.
