‘People were treated with exceptional kindness and compassion’
A care home in Hornsea has been marked as ‘outstanding’ and highlighted for treating people with “exceptional kindess”, by the Care Quality Commission (CQC). Inspectors visited Cornerstone At The Park in July and have just published a glowing report.
The watchdog rated the home outstanding for how effective and caring it was, while the ratings for safe, responsive, and well-led were good. They said managers had brought in systems that were “dynamic and forward-thinking” and that staff felt supported.
Cornerstone At The Park, which opened in 2023, provides residential care to older and younger adults living with dementia and mental health conditions. The 16-bedroom property was catering for 15 residents at the time of inspection and is one of several belonging to Hatzfeld Care Ltd, which operates other sites in Yorkshire, Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire.
Zoe Hara, registered manager at the home, said: “Cornerstone at the Park is delighted to have been inspected and rated outstanding by the CQC at our first inspection. Providing the highest quality of care whilst promoting independence and supporting service users to achieve their goals is at the forefront of all we do.
“It’s all about recognising peoples dreams and supporting them to achieve these however big or small they may be. Service users, family and professionals were fully involved in the inspection, so this achievement is for all. Being outstanding epitomises our Hatzfeld care ‘in pursuit of excellence’ mantra.”
Alan Stephenson, CQC deputy director of operations in South and East Yorkshire, said: “When we inspected Cornerstone At The Park, we found a service that placed person-centred care at the heart of everything they did. People were treated with exceptional kindness and compassion in an environment that was thoughtfully designed to meet people’s needs.
“Staff celebrated and encouraged people’s individuality and supported them to pursue their own hobbies – such as golf, gardening, and pet ownership. The home provided meaningful activities that have an impact, like helping people to socialise, stay fit, grow their confidence, and generally grow as individuals. One person was able to enjoy their first ever Christmas in a home environment.
“Staff involved people and their relatives in their care plans, with constant updates, access to professionals, and freedom around diets and mealtimes. One person was supported in receiving complex treatment around the country. “
Inspectors pointed to a “deeply embedded culture of continuous learning and improvement across the service”, and said people and staff were comfortable raising concerns with confidence it would be acted upon. They also highlighted that staff made sure care plans were detailed and person-specific, while everyone working at the home respected people’s dignity and privacy.
Mr Stephenson added: “We received so much great feedback about the staff and management, from residents, relatives, and other professionals. One person described living in the home as the best move they’d ever made.
“Cornerstone At The Park go above and beyond to allow people to live the lives they want and to have a place they can truly call home. The whole team should be incredibly proud of the positive impact they are having on the people in their care.”
Nottinghamshire-based Hatzfeld Care reported growth in its latest set of accounts for 2023, when it said average occupancy across its homes was at 98%. The firm also operates the 44-room Birkdale Court property in Hull.
