The City striker is spending the season on loan with the League One promotion hopefuls
Former Wolves striker Don Goodman believes Mason Burstow’s move to Bolton Wanderers can prove to be a good piece of business for all parties.
Burstow sealed his move to the Trotters last week just hours after scoring the winner for Hull City in a pre-season friendly at Stockport County. He will spend the duration of the season on loan at the Toughsheet Community Stadium.
Since arriving at the MKM Stadium last summer from Chelsea in a £2m deal, the 21-year-old has found it difficult to play regular football and scored just two goals in the Championship, with both of those coming before Christmas.
Despite looking bright in pre-season and getting on the scoresheet at Edgeley Park, Burstow was given no assurances that he would be a regular under Sergej Jakirovic and therefore opted to drop into League One in a bid to play regularly.
Goodman believes Burstow’s decision to step down a division in a bid to find his form and confidence is a smart move that can benefit City, Wanderers, and the forward.
“I think the loan transfer of Mason Burstow from Hull to Bolton is a win-win for all parties, really,” Goodman told FLW. “He’s a player with bags and bags of potential. He hasn’t managed to show it on a consistent basis; he only started eight games for Hull last season, and only started 12 for Sunderland the season before, when he was there on loan from Chelsea.
“He’s not really found the knack of finding the back of the net, which, of course, as a striker, is what it’s all about. So I think that a drop down to League One, to a good footballing team like Bolton Wanderers, who you will expect to be dominating a lot of games that they play in, winning a lot of games that they play in, scoring lots of goals, could be the opportunity for him to really kick-start his career.”
