The police officer managed to stop the driver and called for back up
An off-duty police officer spotted a vehicle being driven the wrong way down Beverley Road, Humberside Police said. The reported incident took place at around 3.15am this morning (Friday, August 1), near to the junction with Etherington Road.
The force said that the man allegedly tried to make off on foot. However, the officer managed to stop the driver and quickly called for back up from the roads policing unit.
Once the man was detained by the off-duty police officer, the roads policing unit quickly arrived and conducted a roadside breath test. It is reported that the driver failed this.
A 57-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of driving whilst over the prescribed limit. He remains in police custody assisting with ongoing enquiries at this time.
A Humberside Police spokesperson said: “Police officers are never truly off-duty, and their quick thinking and unwavering commitment to public safety sometimes mean they spring into action even whilst driving home after a busy shift. At around 3.15am this morning (Friday, 1 August), an off-duty officer did just that when they spotted a vehicle being driven the wrong way down Beverley Road near to the junction with Etherington Road in Hull.
