A man accused of murder after the death of 44-year-old Matthew Phillips following reports of a serious assault in Beverley has denied the offence. Timothy Tinson, 44, of Lairgate, Beverley, entered his not guilty plea during a mention hearing at Hull Crown Court.

He was brought before the court in custody. It was the first time that he had been asked to enter a plea following a number of earlier hearings.

Tinson is accused of murdering Mr Phillips after an incident in the early hours of Saturday, January 4. Humberside Police said at the time that officers were alerted by a member of the public at about 1am after reports that a man had been seriously assaulted in Lairgate, near the junction of Saturday Market.

Emergency services attended and the man, identified as Mr Phillips, was taken to hospital for treatment to life-threatening injuries. He died shortly afterwards.

Prosecutors Sam Green KC and Jeremy Evans gave brief details of the case to the court. A trial is due to start next week.

Tinson was represented by Stephen Robinson. The defence team is due to be led by Peter Moulson KC.

Tinson was further remanded in custody. A number of people were in court for the hearing.
