John Lundstram admitted his relief at finally getting his move to Hull City confirmed in time for him to feature against Spanish side Getafe on Saturday.

Lundstram’s season-long loan move from Trabzonspor was sealed on Thursday evening after a lengthy period of talks between the two clubs and the EFL to ensure the deal fell within the restrictions City are operating under.

The 31-year-old is no stranger to Tigers’ sporting director Jared Dublin, who worked with Lundstram at Sheffield United, where he secured promotion to the Premier League with the Blades under Chris Wilder, notching up more than a century of appearances in the Steel City before heading to Rangers in Scotland and then Turkey.

He’s also known to head coach Sergej Jakirovic after the pair crossed paths last season in the Turkish Super Lig, and had been keen to bring him to the MKM Stadium this summer.

“I’m happy to finally be here. It took a little bit of time to get sorted, but I’m delighted to get it over the line,” the new arrival told City’s website after the move was finalised.

“I’m happy to get back home with my family and be playing in the Championship again. It’s lit a fire in my belly and I’m excited to get going back in England.

“The manager was familiar with me from last season and eager to get me in, which was massive to see how much he wanted me. Hopefully, I can repay him and bring the performances he hopes I can.”

Lundstram also revealed how former Blades teammate John Egan played a part in selling City to him, as well as former fan favourite Ozan Tufan, who was his teammate in Trabzon.

“John Egan spoke so highly of the club, the lads, and all the staff,” he continued. “John said the fanbase is amazing and it’s a good place to play, which I knew anyway from when I’ve played here.

“I’m looking forward to playing with John again and Regan (Slater), who was a bit younger when I was at Sheffield United, but he’s blossomed into a top player.

“I told Ozan (Tufan) I might be coming to Hull; he was really happy for me and spoke so highly of the club. The impression the manager has given me, the way John spoke about the team, and how the manager wants to play has really ignited something in me.

“I hope I can help the team with my experience and leadership. I can run, tackle, pass, play as an eight or a six. I’m a hard-working player and I’ll give my all. I’m excited to come here and play and super eager to get going.”
