Akin Famewo says the chance to sign for a club of Hull City‘s stature was too good to turn down after he opted to sign a two-year contract with the option of a third.

The 26-year-old defender turned down the chance to stay at crisis club Sheffield Wednesday, having been offered fresh terms to extend his Hillsborough career, and has now put pen to paper on a deal in East Yorkshire.

His arrival bolsters their defensive ranks after Sean McLoughlin and Alfie Jones’ recent departures, joining Charlie Hughes, John Egan and fellow summer arrival Semi Ajayi as the club’s centre-back options.

Famewo did not feature on Tuesday night as City made it five wins from six in pre-season with a promising performance against Sunderland at the MKM Stadium. They saw off the Premier League new boys 2-1 thanks to a goal in each half from Nathan Tinsdale and Abu Kamara.

It’s expected that the powerful defender will be involved when Sergej Jakirovic’s men round off their pre-season campaign with a home clash against La Liga side Getafe on Saturday.

“It’s a proud day for me to sign here. This is a massive club with a great history, and I’m looking forward to our future together,” Famewo said.

“We talked about the plans for the club and what the club wants to achieve. They made it clear they wanted to bring me here and be a part of the club moving forward.

“I can’t wait to join in with the lads and get up to speed with them. The team has got a lot of experience already and hopefully I can add to that.

“I would describe myself as composed on the ball, aggressive on the pitch and passionate. On a personal level, I hope to bring my best every time I play. I’m ready to work hard for the team and ready to achieve with this club.”
