A group of animals were taken to a Hull care home to visit residents who were delighted to spend time with the friendly creatures. Residents at Berkeley House Bupa Care Home were visited by animals brought in by The Purple Pig Company.

The activity coordinator at Berkley House, Rachelle Wood, organised the company to visit the care home after several other successful animal visits took place over the last few years. Rachelle commented: “Our residents adore animals, and love spending time with them. It’s so rewarding to see the smiles they bring to residents’ faces.”

Animals visiting care homes offer numerous benefits to residents including the reduction of loneliness, stress, and anxiety. It has also been found to lead to an improved mood, social interaction, and cognitive function.

These visits can also stimulate memories, particularly for those with dementia, and promote physical activity amongst the elderly. Residents at the home were delighted to spend time with different animals, including alpacas, baby goats, pigs, chickens, ducks and rabbits.

One resident, Jean, said: “It was a brilliant day. They are loving little animals. The baby goats were a particular favourite of mine. I’d love for one to reside alongside us here at Berkley House.”

Another resident, Margaret, added: “I can’t wait for our next visit – the alpacas are my favourite. My family loved the photos and thought it was brilliant.”

The Purple Pig Company has been providing educational farm animal and animal therapy visits to care homes since 2011. A company spokesman said the organisation places animal welfare as its top priority, treating the animals like family.

Berkley House Bupa Care Home utilises animal therapy to boost residents’ moods and help relieve stress as part of its activity programme. Studies reveal that interacting with animals can provide comfort, companionship, and a sense of purpose, especially for those transitioning into care. Visits from furry friends also create happiness and help add something a bit different to the routine of a care home.

Berkley House Bupa Care Home is situated in Bilton Grange, Hull. It welcomes residents in need of residential care, including those living with early-stage dementia.
