Hull City are close to agreeing a deal for winger David Akintola after the Nigerian opted to turn down a move to Turkish club Gençlerbirliği.

City have been keen to bolster their wide options this summer with first-choice duo Liam Millar and Mohamed Belloumi not yet fit to return to first team action following their ACL injuries.

The 29-year-old left Rizespor at the end of the season and has been without a club since. The Tigers have moved to snap up the experienced campaigner on a free transfer to bolster Sergej Jakirovic’s ranks.

Last term, the right-winger scored three times and notched up six assists in 32 Super Lig appearances, as well as four in the Turkish Cup with his final outing seeing him score from the left wing in a 5-2 win over Hatayspor at the end of May.

Akintola has amassed 53 goals in 273 career appearances for a host of clubs including Demirspor and Rosenborg in Norway, playing in the Europa League and Champions League qualifiers.

Should the club get the deal completed and approved by the EFL, Akintola would provide welcome cover on the flanks with Abu Kamara currently the only senior winger fit and available for selection ahead of the season opener at Coventry City on Saturday week.

The Tigers remain under transfer restrictions placed on them by the EFL and can only sign free transfers and loan players that do not command a fee, but hope to be able to give Sergej Jakirovic more options, irrespective of what the outcome of their appeal will be when that is heard next week.

Akin Famewo trained with the Tigers over the weekend while the first team were winning 1-0 at Stockport County in their latest pre-season friendly, and deals for John Lundstram and Enis Destan are thought to be close to being completed, subject to EFL approval.
