A battery farm is set to be built on a site the size of four football pitches.

East Riding of Yorkshire Council approved plans for a large battery energy storage system (BESS) on land to the north of the Saltend Chemicals Park near Hull.

It will include 45 modular battery units, along with transformers and inverter units.

Planning documents state that the site, off Staithes Road, will cover 2.7 hectares (6.7 acres), but the area used for the battery farm will be “much smaller”.

All units will be painted dark green to help fit into their surroundings, according to the Local Democracy Reporting Service.

BESS facilities store energy produced by renewable sources and can release it as required by the grid.
