Two intrepid runners completed a gruelling 160-mile challenge in the early hours of yesterday morning (Sunday, June 29) on behalf of a Hull charity.
Paul Spence, founder and CEO of P.A.U.L For Brain Recovery, and Lee Thompson, a long-term supporter of the cause, embarked on completing the Yorkshire Wolds Way, in both directions, starting out on Friday, June 27. The route took them from Hull to Filey and back again and was completed by running day and night during the heatwave.
The pair reached the finishing line at the Humber Bridge before 1am yesterday morning, having raised over £8,300. They said they were “absolutely shattered, aching, drained and emotional”.
“This was one of the toughest challenges we’ve ever faced, but we kept going for P.A.U.L For Brain Recovery. Massive thanks to our amazing support crew – Josh, Leigh, and Phil – and to Adam, Matt, and Reece for running parts with us. Their support really made a difference and kept us going.”
At 36 hours into the gruelling journey, the duo had posted: “We’ve completed 140 miles of this tough 160-mile challenge. The pain is real – sore legs, blistered feet, and barely any sleep.

“But we knew it wouldn’t be easy. We’re doing this for something far greater than ourselves.
“We’re running to raise awareness of @P.A.U.L For Brain Recovery – a vital service helping people and families rebuild their lives after brain injury. This isn’t just a challenge. It’s a mission to raise awareness, inspire others, and support life-changing services.”
Paul and Lee’s route passed through South Cave, Market Weighton, Goodmanham, Millington, Thixendale, Wharram Le Percy and Sherburn, before reaching Filey and looping back towards the Humber Bridge, the Yorkshire Wolds Way being a renowned National Trail that winds through some of the most scenic and hilly terrain in the region. The pair wanted to say “a big thank you” to the businesses that kindly sponsored them and to everyone for their kind donations.
P.A.U.L For Brain Recovery provides essential community-based support for people living with the effects of acquired brain injury. The funds raised will help deliver support, guidance, education, and well-being sessions to empower all affected.
Tracy, a regular attendee at the charity’s social, enrichment, and health and well-being sessions, said: “Since I first started attending P.A.U.L For Brain Recovery sessions after my stroke, I have never looked back. It’s the best thing I have ever done.
“I come to as many sessions as possible, the charity has helped save my life.”
